Sen. Collins’ office says remark about not seeking another term after November was an “off-hand comment”

Sen. Susan Collins is walking back her comment that she would only serve one more term if elected in November.

Collins’ office says the comment made to a reporter with WCSH during a groundbreaking event Tuesday in Sanford was not a “formal declaration.”

Maine Democrats blasted Collins for the comment, saying in part:

“Mainers are used to this play by now — she says one thing, then does another. She can’t even be up front about something as basic as how long she plans to serve and that tells Mainers everything they need to know.”

Collins, who’s 73 and has served in the Senate since 1997, faces Democratic challengers including political newcomer Graham Platner and Maine Gov. Janet Mills.

Gov. Mills has said she would only serve on term if elected to the U.S. Senate.

Platner has criticized Collins for comments she made during her first campaign that she would only serve one term.

He said he would welcome imposing term limits even if he’s elected.
