A search for a missing 84-year-old Massachusetts man has been suspended after his boat was found abandoned on the shore in York.
York Police say Chester Benjamin Wiggins left Cape Neddick Harbor around 6 p.m. Tuesday on his boat and hasn’t been seen since.
His boat was found crashed along the shore near Freeman Street in York around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Coast Guard says its fast response cutter continued to search throughout the night on Wednesday, while a helicopter began searching the area at dawn Thursday morning.
Wiggins was last seen wearing a blue flannel shirt, tan shorts and low-cut boots.
He’s 5’10” tall, about 220 pounds with blue eyes and gray hair.
The Coast Guard said it suspended the search around 9:45 a.m. Thursday as they look to develop new information.
“Our crews searched throughout the night and into this morning using multiple assets by air and sea. After evaluating our search efforts, environmental conditions and survivability factors, we made the difficult decision to suspend the active search. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Capt. Matt Baker, commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England.
