Building damaged by fire in Lewiston after police pursuit

Car crash into building - Lewiston Fire Department

A car involved in a chase with police crashed into a building in Lewiston early Friday morning, setting it ablaze.

Police say they tried to stop a vehicle being driven by Christian Grenier of Waterville around 1:15 a.m., when he refused to stop and led them on a chase with speeds reaching up to 80 mph.

Grenier then crashed into the MT Bottle Redemption Center on Lisbon Street, which caught fire.

The flames were quickly extinguished by firefighters, but the building has been condemned because of structural integrity concerns.

Grenier, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

He was arrested and charged with Eluding an officer, Operating after suspension, Operating under the influence, Criminal mischief, Criminal speed, Reckless conduct and numerous traffic violations.

Grenier already had seven active license suspensions along with an extensive criminal history.
