The Maine Human Rights Commission is suing five school districts that have passed policies banning transgender students from playing sports.

The Bangor Daily News reports the lawsuit filed Monday asks a Kennebec County Superior Court judge to order the districts to repeal what the commission calls discriminatory policies approved after the Trump administration pressured Maine last winter to ban transgender athletes from girls’ sports.

The commission claims these districts violated state law.

The Daily News reports the districts include SAD 70 in the Aroostook County town of Hodgdon, RSU 24 in the Hancock County town of Sullivan, RSU 73 in the Androscoggin County town of Livermore Falls, the Baileyville School District in Washington County, and the Richmond School Department in Sagadahoc County.

The Human Rights Commission is a quasi-state agency which enforces the Maine Human Rights Act.
