Maine’s Center for Disease Control has reported its first known case of locally-contracted EEE this year.
The Maine CDC says a resident became ill with severe symptoms of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in August and remains hospitalized.
The virus is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes but cannot spread from human to human or between human and animal.
The person is considered presumptive positive for the virus as Maine health officials await confirmation from the U.S. CDC.
