A farmer from Leeds was sentenced Tuesday to 55 years behind bars for the killing of a man who went missing from his farm.
Joseph Chute was found guilty in March for the shooting death of Alex Jackson, who was reported missing in May of 2023.
Proescutors say Chute, who pleaded not guilty, owed Jackson money for a tractor.
Jackson’s body was found stuffed in a barrel at a sand pit in New Hampshire nearly a year after he was last seen alive.
In addition to prison time, Chute was ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution to Maine’s Victims’ Compensation Fund and $7,234 to the Maine Warden Service.
