The sister of one of the victims killed in the Lewiston mass shooting is suing the U.S. government and claiming the tragedy could have been prevented.
The suit was filed this week by Bobbi Nichols, the sister of Tricia Asselin, who was one of the 18 people killed in the shooting in October of 2023.
Nichols says there were signs that the gunman, Army Reservist Robert Card, was unwell but they were ignored by Army personnel.
Nichols was with her sister when she was fatally shot at Just-In-Time Recreation, one of two local businesses where Card opened fire.
This is the second lawsuit filed in connection with the shooting, after a group of 100 family members and survivors filed a suit against the Army last year for ignoring warning signs shown by Card.
Card was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a days-long manhunt.
