U.S. Justice Department sues Maine following denial of request for voter information

The U.S. Department of Justice is suing the state of Maine and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows over her refusal to provide voter information.

Secretary Bellows rejected the Trump administration’s request for voter information last month, arguing that the request violates privacy act laws and the Constitution, which allows states to conduct their own elections without federal interference.

The U.S. DOJ requested voter list maintenance procedures and electronic copies of statewide voter registration lists.

The Trump administration says the state’s decision to withhold the information violates election laws.

In a statement, Bellows said: “It is absurd that the Department of Justice is targeting our state when Republication and Democratic Sectaries all across the country are fighting back against this federal abuse of power just like we are.”

The U.S. DOJ is also suing Colorado in an effort to obtain their voter data.
