Gov. Mills joins summit to discuss trade relations with Canada

Gov. Janet Mills met with other northeast governors and Canadian premiers in Boston to discuss the relationship between the two countries amid an ongoing trade war.

The summit on Monday was aimed at reinforcing trade partnerships between Canada and the U.S., as the Trump administration moves to place tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles and other goods coming across the border.

Gov. Mills says another area of concern for Maine businesses is tourism and worries that animosity towards the U.S. over the President’s comments about making Canada “the 51st state” could damage relations.

“I understand the hostility that people in Canada must feel from that rhetoric. I feel that too. It hurts all of us, and we want to make sure that Canadian citizens understand we want them to come,” Mills said during the summit.

President Trump instituted a pause on many of the new tariff rates that expires on July 9.

The Trump administration says the tariffs will help level the playing field with other countries when it comes to trade.
