Firefighters Union Touts Collins Endorsement, Quietly Backs Pingree

Professional Fire Fighters of Maine

The largest union representing firefighters is backing both Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democratic governor candidate Hannah Pingree.

The Professional Firefighters of Maine held a gathering in Wells Thursday to formally endorse Collins while Pingree announced the group’s backing in a release.

The union says it’s endorsement of Collins reflects her longstanding support for firefighters and the issues that affect their safety, health, livelihoods.

Collins joined top union members in person to tout their backing in a presentation with much fanfare.

The union is recognizing Collins for her hand in improving or replacing 45 fire stations across the state in the last five years by securing nearly $87 million for projects as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Pingree noted in her statement that the union cited her record of delivering for firefighters and standing up to powerful interests on their behalf.

She cited the union as an essential alley in her fight to pass the Kid-Safe Products Act, which removed toxic chemicals from toys and clothing.

Pingree has led Republican Bobby Charles by double-digits in most all polling in the governor’s race, while Collins is locked in a close race for reelection against Democrat Troy Jackson.
