Fall Like Weather to Persist for Rest of August in Maine

It’s still August, but Maine is already seeing fall type weather, with cooler temperatures.

Accuweather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg says the trend will gradually progress as daylight hours get shorter.

“We’re well under 14 hours of sunlight nowadays,” said Lundberg. “We should start to see these cold fronts come through with a little bit more frequency, and behind them, that’s when you start to get some of the cooling that takes place.

Lundberg says Portland could see stretches of daytime high in the 80s as fall moves in, but 90 degrees is becoming less likely.

Portland has experienced 7 days of 90 plus degree weather so far this summer, which is more than the average of 4 days in a typical summer.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Erin is making its way northward in the ocean off the east coast and will start to leave its mark on Maine as early as today.

Lundberg says it will not bring any precipitation to the state.

“It will affect the coastal areas with some rough surf and rip currents and a lot of waves at the beaches,” Lundberg said. “But other than that, we’re just going to watch it sail out to sea to our south and east, and we’re not going to get any rain associated with Erin.”

The storm will bring a high surf as well as rip currents as early as today and lasting through the weekend in Maine.

Waves could reach 8-to-10 feet over the weekend in the Gulf of Maine.
