New data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection show a widening drop in visitors crossing the Canadian border into Maine.

Almost 110,000 fewer people crossed the border in July compared to the same month last year, which is up from a gap of roughly 90,000 for June.

The drop in visitors crossing the northern border began in February, which coincides with growing tensions between the U.S. and Canada.

President Trump has singled out Canada for increased tariffs and suggested the country would be annexed to become the 51st U.S. State.

Travelers crossing the border into Maine last month totaled 276,951 compared to 384,494 in July 2024, a 27.9 percent drop.

Maine has been especially hard hit by the drop in international travel as the gap year-to-year in July nationwide was only 5.5 percent.

This year’s song of the summer is a ballad, not a banger. Here’s what that says about us

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
