Bath Iron Works is praising President Trump’s announcement of a new line of Navy battleships named after himself.

Trump said Monday that two new “Trump-class” battleships would be the first in a “Golden Fleet” of Navy ships, and would be the largest in the history of the world.

BIW President Charles Krugh said in a statement that the plant is ready to fully support the Navy in the design and construction of the fleet.

“As a leading shipbuilder for the Navy for more than 140 years, GDBIW has the capacity, capability, and engineering expertise to design and build the world’s best warships,” said Krugh. “America’s warfighters deserve the most advanced, lethal, and survivable combat ships we can deliver to protect our country and our families.”

The statement did not say whether BIW will be part of the shipbuilding program, which Trump said would total 20 to 25 ships.

Trump made the announcement while flanked by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth  and Navy Secretary John Phelan during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Trump said construction of the first two ships would begin “immediately.”

The announcement comes a few days after the board of directors of the iconic Washington DC performance venue known as the Kennedy Center voted to rename it the “Trump Kennedy Center.”
